A new deck or fence is one of the best-value projects you can do for a GTA home: you use it every summer, and it's one of the first things buyers notice. Here's what decks, fences and interlock patios cost in Toronto and the GTA in 2026, what moves the price up or down, and what to know about permits.
Short answer: a pressure-treated deck runs about $30 to $50 per square foot installed, and a composite deck about $55 to $90 per square foot. A new fence runs about $35 to $65 per linear foot in pressure-treated wood, $45 to $90 in cedar and $50 to $120 in vinyl. All prices are before HST and include materials and labour.
Deck Cost in Toronto (2026)
Deck pricing is mostly about size and the decking material. Here's what typical sizes cost with us:
Small deck (about 150 sq ft): $4,500 to $7,500 in pressure-treated wood, or $8,250 to $13,500 in composite
Medium deck (about 250 sq ft): $7,500 to $12,500 in pressure-treated wood, or $13,750 to $22,500 in composite
Large deck (about 400 sq ft): $12,000 to $20,000 in pressure-treated wood, or $22,000 to $36,000 in composite
Removing and disposing of an old deck usually adds $1,500 to $4,000, depending on its size and how it was built.
Pressure-treated wood or composite?
Pressure-treated wood costs less up front and looks great when it's new, but it needs staining or sealing every couple of years and will check and grey over time. Composite costs more at the start, but it doesn't need staining, won't splinter and holds its colour for years, so many homeowners find it costs less over the life of the deck. Either way, we build the frame from pressure-treated lumber on proper footings, because that's what keeps a deck solid and level.
Fence Cost in Toronto (2026)
Fences are priced by the linear foot. For a typical 100-foot backyard fence:
Pressure-treated wood ($35 to $65 per foot): about $3,500 to $6,500
Cedar ($45 to $90 per foot): about $4,500 to $9,000
Vinyl ($50 to $120 per foot): about $5,000 to $12,000
A gate adds about $800 to $2,500, depending on width and hardware. Taking down and hauling away an old fence adds about $8 to $15 per foot.
Interlock Patio and Walkway Cost
An interlock patio or walkway on a properly compacted base costs about $25 to $35 per square foot with standard interlock, $32 to $45 with premium pavers, and $40 to $60 with large slabs or natural stone. A 300 sq ft interlock patio typically lands between $7,500 and $10,500. Removing an old patio or concrete adds about $3 to $6 per square foot.
What Drives the Price
Size and shape: more square footage costs more overall, but bigger decks cost less per square foot. Curves, angles and multiple levels add labour.
Height off the ground: raised decks need taller posts, more bracing, stairs and railings.
Railings and stairs: glass or aluminium railings cost more than wood pickets; wide feature stairs cost more than a simple set.
Access and site conditions: tight side yards, slopes, roots and rocky soil slow the work down.
Extras: built-in benches, privacy screens, pergolas, lighting and skirting.
Do You Need a Permit?
In Toronto and most GTA cities, a deck usually needs a building permit once its floor is more than about 60 cm (24 inches) above the ground, and some cities require one for any deck attached to the house. Any deck surface that high also needs a guard (railing) built to the Ontario Building Code. Fences usually don't need a permit, but every city has a fence bylaw. In Toronto, backyard fences are generally limited to 2 metres high, and front-yard fences within 2.4 metres (about 8 feet) of the street to 1.2 metres.
Rules differ from city to city, so we check yours and handle any deck permit as part of the job. If your new fence is on a shared property line, we also coordinate with your neighbour.
How Long Does It Take?
Most fences take just a few days to build. A typical deck takes about one to two weeks on site once materials arrive, plus permit time if one is needed. Interlock patios usually take about one week, depending on size and excavation. The best time to plan is late winter, so your project is booked before the spring rush.
How to Make Your Budget Go Further
Choose a simple shape: a rectangle with one set of stairs gives you the most deck for your money.
Mix materials: composite decking on a pressure-treated frame, or a cedar fence with pressure-treated posts.
Plan the whole yard at once: building a deck, fence and patio together saves on setup, equipment and disposal.
Start early: winter planning means you're not competing for spring dates.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a 12x16 deck cost in Toronto?
A 12x16 deck is 192 square feet. In pressure-treated wood that's roughly $5,800 to $9,600, and in composite roughly $10,600 to $17,300, before HST. Height, stairs and railings can move it up or down.
Is composite decking worth it?
If you plan to stay in your home for years, usually yes. You skip the staining and sealing that wood needs, and the boards won't splinter or rot.
Can you replace just the deck boards?
Often, yes. If the frame and footings are sound, we can put new decking and railings on the existing structure, which costs less than a full rebuild. We check the frame first.
Do you give a fixed price?
Yes. After we visit and measure, you get a clear, fixed-price quote before any work starts. If we find something hidden, like rotten framing under old boards, we price it in writing before doing that work.
